Brachycephalic dogs, like bulldogs, are more prone to heatstroke than other breeds. Their short snouts and narrow windpipes can make breathing difficult and cause overheating, particularly on long walks or in the car on hot days.

Success Stories

In these uncertain economic times, in can be daunting if not impossible for some families to bear the cost of emergency veterinary care. Unable to afford the life-saving procedures that their animals so desperately need, they are left with the heartbreaking choice between surrender and euthanasia. But with the support of generous donors, the FACE Foundation has been able to give grants to these needy pet owners. As you read the stories below, know that it is our donors who make their surgeries possible. Please consider making a donation today.

Sparky

This adorable Pomeranian, Sparky, is the best friend and loyal companion to his owner, Thomas.  Sparky was diagnosed with a urethral obstruction at Parkway Pet Clinic, and he needed surgery to save his life.  Thomas was devastated when he learned the cost of Sparky's surgery.  He is a retired gentleman and lives on a limited income.  Thomas couldn't bear the thought of life without his beloved Sparky.  He contacted the FACE Foundation, and thankfully FACE was able to step in and help provide funds for Sparky's surgery.  Sparky is now back at home with his doting owner.  Thomas was so grateful for the FACE Foundation that he even created a Tribute Wall post in honor of Sparky.  You can read it by clicking here.

Moses

Moses, a lovable Yorkshire Terrier mix, needed immediate surgery after being hit by a car. Moses and his owner had been outside feeding the homeless, as was their normal routine, when Moses got free and was struck. Moses’ owner John was horrified as he watched his best friend get hit by a car that did not even bother to stop. John rushed Moses to the vet, where he was told that Moses’ injuries were so severe, that he should put Moses to sleep. Luckily, John was guided to the FACE Foundation, and after extensive surgery, Moses is back at home with his loving owner.

“I prayed all day for God to lead me through the situation. I trusted in the Lord and he directed me right to FACE. Praise the Lord that Moses lives and is as good as he was before he got hit by the car. I wish to thank all who had a part in helping Moses survive.”

Chaos

Chaos, a 3 year old cat, is the beloved family member of his two young owners who are both students and live on a very limited income.  They don't have any children, and Chaos is like a baby to them.
Chaos's owners became distressed when they noticed that he had trouble urinating and rushed him to the nearest veterinary hospital where he was diagnosed with a urethral obstruction. When they learned the cost of the surgery Chaos needed, they were faced with a very difficult decision.  Without surgery, Chaos wouldn't survive, but there was no way that his young owners could afford his surgery.  Fortunately, Chaos's owners learned about the FACE Foundation.  FACE was able to help fund Chaos's life-saving surgery, and he is now recovering at home, safe and sound.

Meet Brutus, a Recent FACE Grantee!

Brutus Willardson is a spunky Boston Terrier puppy, who, due to poor genetics and being the runt of the litter, suffered from a restriction in his colon.  He experienced great difficulty and discomfort during excretion, and his parents knew he needed urgently medical help.  After exploratory procedures and a colectomy, Brutus is celebrating life and the ability to relieve himself properly!  His family is so thankful for FACE’s grant—supplied by the ASPCA—and hopes to forward and advocate FACE’s mission.

“Words stumble and fail to articulate how grateful we are to you for your generosity!  The look on our daughter’s face was priceless with the news that Brutus was able to stay part of our family and get the surgery he so desperately needed.”

-Brutus’s mom, Kelly

Miguel

Miguel is a sweet Chihuahua and Italian Greyhound mix. His owners, Cheryl and Nick, adopted him two months ago from a San Diego rescue group at a dog adoption event. It was love at first sight, and even though Miguel has only been a part of their family for a short amount of time, they have become extremely attached to him.

One day, Nick and Cheryl noticed that Miguel wasn't putting any weight on one of his hind legs. They rushed him to the vet, where they discovered that he had a painful femur fracture and would need surgery to correct it and save his leg. Cheryl and Nick are both deaf and live on a severely limited income, but they were desperate to do what they could to save the life of their precious puppy.

Fortunately, with the help of the FACE Foundation, our generous donors, and the skilled surgeons at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital, Miguel was able to get the surgery he so desperately needed. He is now back at home recovering with his loving family.  Son we will be able to run and play again!

Check out the video of Miguel and his grateful and deserving family below!

Wizard with his family.

Wizard

One of two feline members of the Camerino family, Wizard is a spunky, young cat who enjoys playing with his two human brothers, Joshua and Zach.  One day, Wizard’s parents, Stephanie and John, noticed Wizard was in excruciating pain during urination, and he was diagnosed later with stranguria and a urethral obstruction.  Out of options, Stephanie and John brought Wizard to the veterinary hospital expecting to euthanize him; the costs of veterinary care were too high for the family, which lost 70% of its dry cleaning business due to the economic downturn.  Luckily, FACE provided the family with funding for Wizard’s life-saving surgery, and he is healthy and rambunctious once more!

Update on Wizard:

Wizard is back at home recovering with his family. They sent us a nice card showing their appreciation with photos of Wizard with his brother Iron.

Lupin with his parents.

Lupin

A five-year-old Dachshund, Lupin suffered from a slipped disk in his back.  Lupin was in great pain, and his owner, Shane, rushed him to Veterinary Specialty Hospital, VSH, in San Marcos.  There, doctors determined surgery was necessary to correct Lupin’s slipped disk.  Shane was repaying his student loans, which prevented him from funding Lupin’s surgery, as it costed $6,000.  Luckily for Lupin and Shane, FACE came to the rescue, providing financial assistance to cover the procedure and medical care.  Lupin is recovering currently, but he should return to his normal, Doxie self in no time!

Lil' Man

Lil' Man

Lil’ Man Borum is a 4.5-year-old cat whose father, Nicholas, is in the Navy.  Lil’ Man managed to break his femoral head, or the top of his femur.  Such an injury required surgery, but his parents were unable to pay for a reparative procedure.  Plaza Boulevard Pet Hospital referred the Borums to FACE, which then covered the majority of Lil’Man’s expenses.  Lil' Man is recuperating, and his family is elated that he will soon be back to his normal self!

Charger and his mom.

Charger

Charger is a soft, spunkie little Papillion from Carlsbad.  While dining on a filet, Charger swallowed a piece of a bone, which lodged in his throat!  Charger began gagging, swallowing, and regurgitating all of the food repeatedly.  After being diagnosed with a "near complete esophageal obstruction," and with your donations alone, Charger underwent an endoscopy.  Although he'll have to chew carefully to avoid bones, Charger is now back to his little, Papi self!  Thank you, and just look at that FACE!
"Thank you again for everything you have done to save my little dog's life...Charger is back to his normal, cute self!"
-Charger's Mom

Cozmo

Cozmo loves to run around and play with his family. Cozmo was playing like it was any other day when he tried to make a jump over a fence and accidentally lacerated his leg! Cozmo was rushed to the Carlsbad Animal Hospital and was told that he needed surgery immediately! Cozmo's family knew that they could not afford the unexpected surgery, so they frantically turned to FACE for help. In a very quick effort, FACE was able to help fund Cozmo's same-day, life-saving surgery! Cozmo's family was so grateful that FACE helped to save Cozmo's life! He is now running around and playing like nothing ever happened and is happy to be home and back to normal!

"Thank you so much for your assisting us with Cozmo. He is a very happy dog, which makes us happy. Your foundation is truly a blessing."

Chanel

At only three months of age, Chanel the fluffy and curly-haired Maltipoo fractured her leg when she jumped off of the couch in her new home. Chanel is so young and small that this fracture was life-threatening and required surgery as soon as possible. Unfortunately her owner could not afford the surgery, but they love her so much that they would do anything for her. With help from FACE, Chanel was able to have her life-saving operation. She is now recovering with her new family so that she can play again like a youthful puppy loves to do. (But as parents say... No more jumping off the couch!)

And when my Mom thinks about your foundation and what it has done for us, she still cries tears of joy! My brother is also very thankful for FACE as well and cannot wait to run and play with me again.

I am a big, strong boy with a big,

strong heart- thanks to FACE.

Daisy

Daisy is a sweet American Bulldog mix, nearly 1.5-years-old.  She is the heart of a local military family that would do anything for her.  One day, Daisy's "dad" walked her outside, and in the blink of an eye, she saw a ball down the street and went after it; Daisy was hit by a truck.  Her owner was forced to watch as Daisy’s body was dragged under the vehicle. Miraculously, none of the tires crushed her. She was alive, but badly injured.  She needed life-saving surgery to repair many broken bines, but unfortunately the procedure would cost several thousand dollars.  With help from friends, family, and the FACE Foundation, Daisy's life was saved.  She is now recovering comfortably at home with the family that loves her unconditionally.

Yoda

Yoda, a 12-year-old Rat Terrier/Corgi mix, was in critical condition due to an infected mass that had been growing on his abdomen.  Although the tumor was benign, the infection could have been deadly.  Sadly, both of his owners have lost their jobs as well as their home.  The mass had grown so large that it was life-threatening, as well as debilitating, and immediate surgery was needed, otherwise Yoda would have been put to sleep.  Because of the couple's unfortunate financial hardship, they turned to FACE for assistance to pay for the surgery to remove the tumor.  Yoda is now recovering and is very happy to still be with his caring family.

Missy

This charming 6-month-old Pitbull puppy named Missy is part of a family that was transplanted to San Diego due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina.  She was hit by a car, breaking her back right leg, and exposing bone on one of her toes.  Missy needed surgery to repair her life-threatening injury.  Unfortunately, one of her owners is unemployed, and they have a few dependents that rely on them.  The FACE Foundation was happy to help out this loving family that care so much about their puppy.  After all this family has been through, this little dog is doing very well.

Tiny Bear

Tiny Bear is an 11-year-old Pomeranian that loves to spend time with his family.  One of his legs was badly injured, and the only option to save him would be to amputate the leg.  This kind of surgery is very expensive, however it was necessary to save his life.  Tiny Bear's "dad" is in the Marine Corps and must care for his family and pay bills on a limited income.  FACE was able to donate the funds needed to cover Tiny Bear's surgery so that he could continue to live life to the fullest.  Some of his favorite activities include playing in the snow while on vacation, cuddling with his family, and cheering for the Dallas Cowboys.

Rudy

Rudy's "mom" turned to the FACE Foundation when he needed a dangerous foreign body removed.  This 3-year-old Miniature Pinscher had to undergo expensive surgery that was too much for his owner to afford; she is a full-time student that works part-time.  Due to the generosity of FACE, Rudy was able to have his surgery and is now back to his spunky self.

Bell

Bell is a beautiful 2-month-old Labrador Retriever that got into an unfortunate rivalry with another dog that resulted in a fractured jaw.  This life threatening injury required expensive surgical repair so that Bell would be able to eat on her own.  Bell's "dad" is a marine at Camp Pendleton, and without the help of FACE, her family would not have been able to pay for the life-saving surgery that she needed.  Bell is recovering quickly, and is already bouncing around the house, just as all puppies love to do.

She didn't know what she was going to do and she was scared that she was going to lose me too but then the wonderful doctors there and FACE came to my rescue. Neither one of us have the words to say how much you all mean to us." –Taz, as told to owner Jaxston Kyle

Chowder

Chowder's mom left him for a few hours to run some errands and noticed he was limping when she returned. Turns out, Chowder had broken his knee and would need surgery. The 4-month-old Boxer had only lived with his family for two months after being adopted. Chowder is deaf and his owner's 11-year-old twins learned sign language to communicate with him. The surgery to fix Chowder's leg was far beyond what his owner could afford. She's been disabled for several years and lives with her parents. FACE provided much needed financial assistance to get Chowder back on his feet and now he can live a long and happy life with his adoptive family.

Rocky

Rocky

When 12-week-old Rocky's tummy didn't agree with the new treats his owner gave him, he promptly threw them up. Unfortunately, part of a treat got stuck in Rocky's lung, giving him pneumonia and causing him a lot of pain. His veterinarian put him on antibiotics but Rocky's little body wasn't strong enough to fight the infection. The only way Rocky could survive was to have part of his infected lung removed. Rocky's heartbroken owner just couldn't afford his life-saving surgery. This left her with euthanasia as the only other option to ease his suffering. FACE learned about this case and was able to step in and help save Rocky's life! Rocky went into surgery that evening and was back in his owner's arms three days later. After a few check ups, Rocky was deemed happy and healthy. He was soon back to doing what puppies do best— eating, sleeping, playing and looking cute!

"I have the best news! I was so upset last night and prayed and begged for Rocky to get well. This afternoon I got a call and was told that FACE had decided to fund Rocky's surgery and after care!...I'm so grateful and so relieved." --Brandishea Christian

Shadow

Shadow’s owners panicked when they noticed she had lost control of her back legs. Soon, their loving 10-month-old puppy was vomiting and experiencing severe tremors. It was then that they noticed a bag of snail bait torn open in their yard. Shadow was rushed to the hospital, where she spent two nights recovering from the toxic amount of snail bait she had ingested. The vet discovered that due to a genetic problem her knee cap was not sliding in its natural groove. Surgery corrected Lady's abnormality and she was released to her thankful family the next day.

Pancake and Tortilla

Pancake and Tortilla were born with a birth defect that would have killed them before they were even 12 weeks old. They were born “flat,” which is why their owner gave them such appropriate and cute names. They needed a special surgery to prevent their rib cages from growing into their hearts. Thanks to a dedicated veterinary staff and the caring team at the FACE Foundation, Pancake and Tortilla will get to pounce and play like other kittens!

Rally

Rally

Poor Rally wasn't feeling well. He stopped eating, became lethargic and just seemed depressed. Tests revealed damage to his stomach and colon. Rally's owners could not afford his life-saving surgery. FACE was able to pay for Rally's veterinary treatment, allowing him to fully recover.

Zoe

Zoe

Two-year-old Zoe is back at home with her loving family after her run-in with a venomous spider. Her owners were dismayed to discover that Zoe's estimated treatment cost was more than they could afford. With the help of valuable donors, the FACE Foundation was able to provide Zoe's family a grant to cover her treatment costs.

Buddy

Buddy

Lap dog Buddy is walking again with the help from Veterinary Specialty Hospital and FACE. The 3-year-old Miniature Dachshund couldn't even stand when his owner brought him to the vet. Buddy cried out in pain when picked up, and the pain kept getting worse. The specialists at VSH found that Buddy had a herniated disk. Unable to afford surgery, Buddy's owner tried pain medication, but it didn't help. Her only other choice was to put Buddy to sleep, a gut wrenching decision she prepared herself to take. Before bringing Buddy to the vet, something made her call FACE. Within hours, Buddy was in surgery having his spine repaired. He is now back at home and is expected to make a full recovery.

"Words cannot express how grateful I am to the FACE Foundation!... Buddy is very dear to me; but I could not let him suffer, and I couldn't afford to give him the surgery he needed... The FACE Foundation agreed to pick up most of the cost of the MRI and surgery, leaving me with a smaller bill that I could afford. I'm so happy to be able to give my wonderful dog another chance at life!" -- Barbara J. Braybrook
